Hapag-Lloyd Cruises will return to the Great Lakes in fall 2011 with the Columbus after a four-year absence. The Port of New Orleans Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the Regional Planning Commission to fund the Intermodal Riverfront Center at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal. The project will allow improved access between the Julia Street Cruise Terminal, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Erato Street Cruise Terminal, Riverwalk Marketplace and the John Churchill Chase street car station. The project, estimated to cost $500,000, will replace a 25-year-old staircase, refurbish an existing port building elevators and escalators for handicap accessibility, and make other site improvements. A $360,000 Federal Transportation Authority grant will pay for most of the improvements, while the port will pick up the balance. Architects are currently in the final stages of design and completion is expected to be in summer 2011. “Cruise passengers, as well as the general public, will benefit greatly from improved access between our cruise terminals and adjacent entertainment, convention and shopping venues,” said Gary LaGrange, the port’s president and CEO. Holland America Line will offer 24 seven-day cruises to Bermuda aboard Veendam in 2011, continuing the schedule established this year. The premium line returned to regular Bermuda service from New York in 2010 after more than 25 years. The 2011 voyages begin May 1 and will sail roundtrip from New York through Oct. 9, calling at St. George’s and Hamilton.

The 1,350-guest Veendam will spend one day at St. George’s and two nights at Hamilton. The cruises will call first at St. George’s, Bermuda’s original capital. Princess Cruises in the fall 2011-spring 2012 cruise season will offer South American cruises and cruise-tours, taking passengers down the Amazon River, around Cape Horn, along Brazil or up to Machu Picchu.
