Princess Cruises in the fall 2011-spring 2012 cruise season will offer South American cruises and cruise-tours, taking passengers down the Amazon River, around Cape Horn, along Brazil or up to Machu Picchu. SeaDream Yacht Club has set the speaker program for its October and November westbound trans-Atlantic voyages. On SeaDream I’s Oct. 14 to 26 crossing from Malaga to San Juan, speakers are Col. Walter Cunningham, who was an astronaut with NASA and spent 12 years as a venture capitalist, and maritime historian Brian Beck, a chartered engineer with more than 30 years experience.
SeaDream II’s Nov. 10 to 21 crossing from Lisbon to San Juan will feature Dr. Fred Chernow, a retired professor of psychology from St. John’s University in New York. Chernow is a seminar leader in the field of memory improvement. Also scheduled to speak is Jon Bowermaster, a six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council and writer and filmmaker who has made sea kayak expeditions in the past 10 years from the Aleutian Islands to Vietnam, French Polynesia to Chile/Argentina/Bolivia, Gabon to Croatia, and Tasmania to Antarctica.

The Port of New Orleans Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the Regional Planning Commission to fund the Intermodal Riverfront Center at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal. The project will allow improved access between the Julia Street Cruise Terminal, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Erato Street Cruise Terminal, Riverwalk Marketplace and the John Churchill Chase street car station. The project, estimated to cost $500,000, will replace a 25-year-old staircase, refurbish an existing port building elevators and escalators for handicap accessibility, and make other site improvements. A $360,000 Federal Transportation Authority grant will pay for most of the improvements, while the port will pick up the balance. Architects are currently in the final stages of design and completion is expected to be in summer 2011. “Cruise passengers, as well as the general public, will benefit greatly from improved access between our cruise terminals and adjacent entertainment, convention and shopping venues,” said Gary LaGrange, the port’s president and CEO. Holland America Line will offer 24 seven-day cruises to Bermuda aboard Veendam in 2011, continuing the schedule established this year. The premium line returned to regular Bermuda service from New York in 2010 after more than 25 years. The 2011 voyages begin May 1 and will sail roundtrip from New York through Oct. 9, calling at St. George’s and Hamilton.
The 1,350-guest Veendam will spend one day at St. George’s and two nights at Hamilton. The cruises will call first at St. George’s, Bermuda’s original capital. Founded in 1609, the town of St. George’s in the northeast area of Bermuda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the Americas. Following St. George’s, guests will have the opportunity to explore the island’s capital, Hamilton, which is the commercial hub and seat of government. The Pacific Princess will sail up the Amazon River on a 14-day cruise that calls at St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Tobago and Devil’s Island. Stops along the Amazon include Santarém, Boca da Valéria and Parintins with an overnight stay in Manaus. The ship departs on Dec. 16 and Dec. 30, 2011.
The Star Princess will operate a 14-day day cruise between Rio de Janeiro and Santiago around Cape Horn. Calls will be made to Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Falkland Islands, Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. The voyage includes scenic cruising around Cape Horn, including Beagle Channel, the Strait of Magellan and the Chilean fjords. Departures are Dec. 24, 2011, Jan. 7, Jan. 21, Feb. 4, Feb. 18 and March 2, 2012.
A 15-day sailing from Rio de Janeiro to Fort Lauderdale by Star Princess starts with an overnight in Rio, then visits Brazilian ports of Salvador and Recife, plus Barbados, Antigua and St. Maarten. The sailing departs March 17, 2012. The Star Princess also offers a 16-day cruise that visits three continents. The voyage from Venice to Rio de Janeiro includes an overnight stay in Venice and calls at Dubrovnik, Corfu, Malta (Valletta), Tunis/Carthage (La Goulette), Gibraltar and Recife. The five-day Machu Picchu land extension departs from Lima. The tour includes a guided tour of Machu Picchu and the historic city of Cusco and the nearby Sacred Valley and Sacsayhuaman Fortress, as well as enjoy rail travel up into the mountains. The four-night Iguazú Falls tour features extra time to explore Rio de Janeiro, plus two days at Iguazú Falls. Travelers will view the falls from several vantage points as well as from excursion on an ecological jungle train and a boat ride.
