An AdventureSmith Explorations cruise on Baja’s Sea of Cortez, March 19 to 26, will showcase migrating gray whales that are still prized as bounty even though commercial whaling was banned in 1986 by the International Whaling Commission. The number of gray whales present makes Baja the site of one of the largest migrations of any mammal, many covering over 10,000 miles each year.

The trip, “Baja: Among the Great Whales,” is sponsored by the Santa Barbara Travel Bureau on behalf of the Origami Whales Project headquartered in Carpinteria, Calif. Since 2004, the project has worked to raise awareness of threats to dolphins and whales through its large-scale public art project, “Curtain of 34,000 Origami Whales.” This visual statement memorializes whales in the thousands slaughtered by Japan, Norway and Iceland after the 1986 global ban. The director of the Origami Whales Project, Peggy Oki, will join the cruise. A portion of the cruise proceeds will assist this project. As an incentive, guests booking by Aug. 15 receive a $250 per person early-booking discount off of per-person rates from $4,990, double occupancy.

A public evening co-hosted by Oki and Todd Smith, founder of AdventureSmith Explorations, will help raise awareness of the threat facing whales worldwide. The event will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Santa Barbara Travel Bureau office, 1028 State St., Santa Barbara. The cruise will be operated by the National Geographic Sea Bird, which accommodates 62 guests in 31 outside cabins. A fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks allows encounters with the whales and other marine life. For more information, visit www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/94.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises will return to the Great Lakes in fall 2011 with the Columbus after a four-year absence. Built in 1997, the Columbus was specifically designed to navigate the locks of the Great Lakes and is one of the few ocean-going cruise ships that can successfully travel through the Great Lakes. The 420-guest Columbus offers two Great Lakes itineraries in 2011, as well as a cruise along the eastern coast of North America.

The two German/English Great Lakes itineraries visit seven states, two Canadian provinces and all five lakes. A highlight is when the Columbus proceeds through the eight locks of the 28-mile long Welland Canal after tackling a height difference of almost 328 feet. Optional outings include attending a real Pow-Wow and traversing the Agawa Canyon through a wilderness with waterfalls, ravines and steep passes.

The eastern U.S. and Canada itinerary travels from Toronto to Florida. This itinerary cruises through the St. Lawrence Seaway and stops at Boston, Newport, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Also a dedicated golf cruise, this itinerary features a PGA golf professional and the chance to practice on a 21-course golf simulator onboard. Additionally the golf package allows guests to tee off at five golf courses along the route at an additional cost.

Hapag-Lloyd is a German company, but on these cruises, travel documents and information is provided in English prior to their trip. Onboard, daily programs, menus, announcements, lectures/video presentations and safety drill instructions are offered in English, as are shore excursions at each port of call. The ship’s crew is fluent in English.

The 13-day Great Lakes cruise from Toronto to Chicago departs Sept. 5, 2011, and includes Welland Canal, Windsor, Tobermory, Parry Sound, Georgian Bay, Little Current, Lock Soo, Thunder Bay, Duluth and Mackinac Island.
